PEERS Meeting – May 3rd

Today was our monthly Business Meeting at PEERS.

We started as usual with introductions and commercials. These meetings usually give us a little bit more time to “show & tell” during our commercials. Julie {Tobias Weiss Design} brought some paper samples and explained some of the differences and reasons why you might pick one over the other. Bonnie {Rice’s Pharmacy & Gift} usually brings a little something from the store to share, and today was no exception. She brought in some very stylish compact wallets in a couple colors. They’re always get new things in at Rice’s, so it’s a good idea to stop in regularly to see what’s in. Karen Swanger announced this year’s KidSpirit poster scavenger hunt. There are 5 different KidSpirit posters {for science, art, sports, etc} posted around Corvallis with a QRC square. Prizes await participants that find all of them. Nadine {RN On-Call} shared a recent scenario that stressed the importance of having a healthcare/emergency advocate. And Ondria {Balance Point Acupuncture} & Joni {Essentially Healed} both reminded all of us that allergy season is here, not that some of us needed reminding, and that both acupuncture & essential oils are helpful treatments. We live in the grass-seed capitol of the world… yea, there are allergies here.

There was quite a few topics to discuss for the new business aspect of our meeting – most of which will not be shared here.  But as a reminder we are actively seeking new members. If you or someone you know wants to find out if they would be a good fit for our group please read the “About PEERS” and “PEERS Meetings” sections and contact one of our members. 🙂 Some professions we would especially like to see in our group are hair stylist, esthetician, venue coordinator, videographer, retail/resale {ex. clothing}, marketing/social media management, florist, event planner, craft supplies {ex. yarn}, and restaurateur.

We get to have another guest host next week. We’re heading out to Julie’s house to visit her micro-farm and baby goats {called “kids”, who apparently like to jump on people}. Hopefully the weather will be cooperative and we’ll also be able to take a new group photo on her lovely property.

PEERS Meeting April 26th

Another lovely meeting with the ladies at PEERS on Thursday.

We were back at our home-location, but unfortunately we were missing a few people due to the Boys & Girls Club Annual Pancake Breakfast. {missed you guys}
A few small announcements & related topics in the news: Lora with Initials Inc has a great special going on right now. The insulated tote is only $22 {reg. $44} when you spend $35. A black one with orange monogramming would be perfect for the “Cool” Dad at his tailgaters. Nadine with the Gluten Free RN & RN On-Call shared Dr. Donohue’s article {link is to Dr. Donohue’s home paper} in the Gazette-Times {Thursday} about Celiac Disease. And Shelley of Alta’s Antiques & Collectibles has a new supply of vintage wedding cake decorations just in time for wedding season! Shelley currently sells her vintage jewelry and other pieces on Ebay and in local antique stores, but she’s thinking of also opening an Etsy store soon.

Office of Drs. Bugni, Laster, & Jensen earlier this year.

Our presenters were Mary & Janelle from the Dental office of Drs. Bugni, Laster, and Jensen.
Mary started us off with some helpful insights about dental care for elderly patients; mostly in terms of best treatment for damaged teeth and the changing face of dentistry. More patients over 65 are interested in cosmetic treatments as the Boomers are increasingly more active & social than the previous generations. In any case dentists are obligated to tell the patient about all the treatment options available and make a professional assessment about which option would work best for this individual patient. Mary then turned it over to Janelle for some education about electric toothbrushes. Did you know that most people only brush their teeth for 25 seconds? You’re suppose to brush for 2 full minutes {I really thought about this one with respect to my own habits…. yea, maybe 1 minute.}. This dental office particularly likes the Sonicare line of electric toothbrushes. Janelle passed around a few different models for us to look at and turn on. She went on to explain that part of why they’re so effective is that the sonic wave created by the brush pushes the water and toothpaste in between your teeth. Also, the strong vibrations help break up food that is stuck between teeth, as well as stains and build up.
Fun Fact: You can wash your regular tooth brush {or the head of your elec. toothbrush} in the dishwasher!
Lastly, both Janelle and Mary stressed the importance of flossing. FLOSS FLOSS FLOSS. Water picks are great and can also be used, but nothing is as effective or valuable as FLOSSING.
This week will be our monthly business meeting… so there might not be much to share.

PEERS Meeting April 19th @ Real Deals

Sorry that this post is a bit later than we’d like, but it’s here now so let’s get sharing. Last week (Thurs April 19) we had another hosted meeting at a local Corvallis business. We met at Real Deals; a home décor shop on the corner of Kings Blvd & Buchanan Ave (across from Fred Meyer).

Look for this sign at the corner of Kings & Buchanan

PEERS started the meeting with introductions and commercials; referrals and announcements. Kristin Bertilson from Queen B Organizing joined us for her second guest meeting {we really hope she joins our group :)} with more tips and ideas about how to keep yourself …and your business from gathering too much clutter. Several members were still working off sore muscles from the Corvallis Half-Marathon the weekend before {GREAT job Nadine, Lora, Karen M, Anne, & Karen S} and Karen S gave out more information on Sole Mates for her Girls on the Run program.
Real Deals {RD} is a regional franchise that sells a quickly rotating stock of home décor items. Mother-Daughter Owners Beth & Allie shared with us how RD got started in Jefferson, Georgia and also how they got their own store started right here in Corvallis. One of the principles of RD is that you’re only open 2 days per week. With most of the over 70 locations open only Thursday & Saturday RD can keep the overhead, and therefore the retail costs down. The only exception is the original store in Jefferson, GA “The Mothership” is open 6 days/week. Appropriately, RD has an “Obsession Statement” {rather than a Mission Statement} to: 1. Wow you with amazing (startling, classic, fresh, super-cute, hip) décor at prices that are too good to be true. 2. Prove that YOU are our favorite (most-valued, preferred, adored, best-looking) customer. 3. Create a unique (fabulous, dynamic, mind-blowing, jaw dropping) shopping experience you can’t wait to repeat.
We’re finally returning to our usual location for this week’s meeting.

If you are interested in attending one of our meetings please contact our president or one of our current members.

PEERS Meeting April 12th @ Valley Eye Care

Sometimes PEERS will meet at one of our members’ business. For our meeting yesterday Chris had invited us to Valley Eye Care.

We were greeted by some of the VEC staff that was nice enough to come in for our early meeting time (7:30am) and a spread of gluten-free muffins, scones, and other treats (thank you Blue Monkey Bakery). The meeting began as usual with our 15-30 second commercials for our businesses followed by referrals.

Nadine (GF RN & RN On-Call) brought some very cool new GF cookbooks for the group to preview, one of which she wrote the foreward for (yay Nadine!), and is gearing up to host a new workshop on eating paleo. Karen’s (KidSpirit & GOTR) Girls on the Run teams will have a water station at the Corvallis Half-Marathon on Sunday morning. She is also hosting at post-half Initals Inc party with Lora at her house. Fun! And Julie’s (Tobias Weiss Design) chickens are bringing in lots of eggs… I got 2 doz.

We were spilt into two groups for the tour of Valley Eye Care. We got to see the upstairs lab area where they shape lenses for glasses frames and learn about some of the advancements in lens material. Then we went downstairs to see some of the new equipment and tools they have for getting a better look at their patient’s eyes. VEC offers a great selection of frames and services, including a complimentary eye exam for babies (around 6 months). Chris always reminds us to take good care of our eyes by wearing sunglasses whenever possible.

It was a fun, as always, to see the inner workings of another Corvallis business. Next week we’re meeting at another local business. Watch here for an update next week.

New Media for PEERS Corvallis

Well it’s been an interesting day hasn’t it? Here it is, 4:30pm and we’ve had TWO very heavy down-pours of HAIL! I guess that’s what we can expect here in Corvallis… expect the unexpected.

Today we’re bringing our web presence up to date with this new blog that will also serve as our webpage. WP is having some technical glitches today so the header image is the one that came with the theme. Hopefully we’ll be able to showcase some of our own lovely scenery in the header space very soon.

What is PEERS? In a nut-shell PEERS is a ladies business group for the Corvallis, Benton County area. We’re catagorically exclusive, which means that there can only be one of each profession in the group. This eliminates inner-competition and allows the group to maintain a space where we can focus on being P.rofessional, continuing E.ducation, encourage business E.nhancement, freely give R.eferrals, and give eachother S.upport {PEERS}. We meet every Thursday morning at 7:30am. If you’d like to know more about our meetings visit the PEERS Meetings page. We’re always looking for new members. Currently we especially interested in members that would fill the categories of: hair stylist, esthetician, retail {clothing}, florist, and restaurateur.

We’ll be posting weekly after our meeting to share what we learned about each others businesses, new members, and any specials our members are running.

Feel free to comment or ask questions.
